What to consider when wanting to install AxCMS.net on a 3rd party webhost?

The system requirements are described here: http://en.help.axinom.de/en_help_cms_inst_sys.AxCMS?ActiveID=1342

But it is good idea to be sure, if your webhost allows you to access IIS and it must be possible to install 2 databases (for management and live). On the other hand, for installing AxCMS.net you do not need to run any .exe files, which are often not allowed on the hosting environments.

What are the main steps to change the Sample template Live Site URL and the CMS Extension?

More about configuring IIS read here: http://en.help.axinom.de/en_help_cms_inst_iis.AxCMS?ActiveID=1353

But here concrete about changing these properties:

First of all change extension in web.config key cmsExtension. Then in key HomepageUrl. Also in Handler section. And in PublishService section. A good trick here is to open all web.configs in visual studio and search for .sample in all open documents.

Then you have to check db tables - in AxPage table in field URL there is the extension set, change it here. Then check AxLink and AxLabel table for occurences of links to pages with old extension.

Then change extension in IIS.

Set virtual key in web.config empty. Please remove all occurences (search again with visual studio). Then change key LiveSystemRootDir and set key to folder with live system inside.

If you still use virtual directory for management system, you must not change anything in db, but publish all pages again. Before that change IIS.

What do I have to do differently when installing AxCMS.net with SQL 2005 Express?

Simply follow all the instructions in the installation manual (http://en.help.axinom.de/en_help_cms_inst.AxCMS?ActiveID=1366 ) BUT

change the db connection string in all web.configs: change "(localhost)" to "MYCOMPUTER\SQLEXPRESS".
Leave the rest as it is.

How to configure the paths in web-config to work with documents?

To work smoothly with documents, e.g. being able to integrate, upload and view the documents, please control your paths in web.config extra carefully:

Important:
1. case -> CMSApplicationVirtualPath is empty (productive systems)
2. case -> CMSApplicationVirtualPath will be set

1. case scenario:

CMSSystemRootDir and MediaServerRootDir
-> must be indicationg to the folder of CMS.
For example:
"d:\inetpub\Clients\testsystem\cms.testsystem.axasp.net"

MediaServerHostName
-> must be indicating to the host of CMS.
For example:

2. case scenario:

CMSSystemRootDir
-> must be indicating to the system folder.
For example:
"c:\projects\AxCMS_TestSystem"

MediaServerRootDir
-> must be indicating to folder of CMS.
For example:
"c:\projects\AxCMS_TestSystem\AxCMSweb_Testsystem”

MediaServerHostName
-> must be indicating to the host of CMS and to the VirtualPath
For example:

Can I use AxCMS.net with Oracle / other database?

By default, AxCMS.net runs on MS SQL Server 2005 and above, including the Express Edition (free).

Other database engines are currently not supported out of the box. Adding such support can be considered in an individual project. Contact us if you have a need to run AxCMS.net agains another database engine.

Note: said above is true for AxCMS.net native database. From your project code you can access any other external database, provided there exists a .NET database provider for it (incl. Oracle, mySQL and many others).
