KB10028: Error while publishing: Not all content elements are checked in
If a developer removes placeholders without first checking the content in such placeholders, an error while publishing may occur.

SYMPTOMS

  • User selects all the objects on a page and checks them in.
  • Then tries to publish the page.
  • It fails with the error "Not all content elements are checked in". But the user does not see any checked out elements in the content editor.

CAUSE

This could happen this way:

  • Editor creates or changes a text (image/flash/...). Text is checked out.
  • Developer removes the placeholder, containing the text, from the page template (or renames it).
  • The objects are still in the database, still checked out, but not available in the content editor any more.

SOLUTION

Rule for developers: never remove/rename placeholders without first checking the content in such placeholders.
The content should be deleted manually or at least checked in.

Workaround

Users can find their objects under Publication / Check in.
It shows all objects, even those invisible in the content editor.
